Title: Optimization and equilibrium problems in renewable power systems and markets
This talk will focus on optimization and equilibrium problems in the energy sector. The transition to a sustainable energy system requires a redesign of traditional decision-support tools to accommodate fluctuating renewable energy sources and the resulting need for flexibility, steering the field toward dynamic and stochastic optimization. In parallel, equilibrium modeling effectively captures the characteristics of liberalized markets, including misalignments between market participants’ objectives and social welfare that arise from market imperfections. Recent contributions to this research agenda address coordinated optimization across energy sectors—a critical element in achieving decarbonization—and markets with non-convexities stemming from discrete decisions. Beyond supporting operational and investment decisions, the proposed modeling framework also provides a foundation for energy policy assessment and market design.
