Steen Nielsen is now Associate Professor emeritus at the Department of Economics and Business Economics, Aarhus University. He received his master’s degree in accounting and auditing from Aarhus School of Business, and later, his Doctoral degree in Cost & Management Accounting (Econ Dr.) from the Stockholm School of Economics, Sweden in 1996, for which he also received The Swedish Association of Graduates in Business Administration and Economics Award Prize. He is currently a member of Cluster for Operations Research, Analytics, and Logistics (CORAL), situated at the Department of Economics and Business, Aarhus University, Denmark.

Research

Steen's research is within the combination of Performance Measurement & Management (areas within both management accounting and supply chain management), business analytics, data (small and big), machine learning, stochastic simulation, and statistics, and how these issues can be used for decision-making. He has also contributed by conducting several empirical surveys through the years (using specifically structural equation modelling) of how concepts such as (TD) ABC (activity-based costing), the balanced scorecard, target costing, life-cycle costing, and many more, are related to each other, both within the public sector and the private sector. All the work is published in both international journals and Danish journals.

Teaching activities

Through the years Steen has taught on MBA level, bachelor level (management accounting and specific elective courses in business analytics and performance), master level (management accounting & control, and supply-chain management/Advanced Excell). In addition, Steen has been coordinator for Master of Management Accounting & Control (from 1996 to 2008), and has also undertaking supervision for BA-students, master students, and Ph.D. students.
