Tools for managing sickness absence

Reducing sickness absence saves workplaces money while boosting job satisfaction. In her new book, Associate Professor Ann-Kristina Løkke Møller from the Department of Economics and Business provides concrete advice on how to reduce the number of days lost to illness.

With her book “Fra sygt til sundt fravær – en håndbog til nedbringelse af sygefravær” (From sick to healthy absence – a guide for reducing sickness absence), Associate Professor Ann-Kristina Løkke Møller from Aarhus University's School of Business and Social Sciences focuses on the sickness-related absence which keeps 150,000 Danes away from their work each day. 

- I’ve chosen to write a book because I find that many private and public enterprises lack the knowledge and tools they need to cut sickness absence,” says Ann-Kristina Løkke Møller.

The book is intended as a source of practical inspiration and is based on Ann-Kristina Løkke Møller’s earlier research which demonstrated that employees’ sickness absence depends on their managers’ absence.

The author also provides specific advice on how to minimise absence on the basis of four case studies – the Municipality of Horsens, the energy supplier Amagerværket, the postal centre Sydjyllands Postcenter and Nordea Liv & Pension, which have all managed to successfully reduce sickness absence in different ways.

Readers can, for example, draw inspiration from the Municipality of Horsens’s “1-5-14model”, where the manager contacts the sick employee on his/her first day off work, fifth day off work and fourteenth day off work. The model has resulted in sickness absence among Municipality of Horsens employees falling by 20% over a two-year period.
