Associate professor Rune Majlund Vejlin has received a grant of DKK 2.7 million for his research project entitled "Understanding the Causes of the Gender Wage Gap" from the Danish Council for Independent Research.

Description of the project:

Gender differentials in wages are a persistent feature of the labor market. The projects in this proposal will open the black box and explain the reasons for the gender wage gap. The proposal consists of three subprojects. In the first, we will develop, solve, and estimate an equilibrium model with human capital formation and parental leave. The idea is to incorporate several explanations for the gender wage gap such as productivity differences, differences in parental leave, differences in productivity of labor market experience, and discrimination. We will use the estimated model for counter-factual simulations in order to understand the causes of the gender wage gap. In the second project, we want to estimate how much of the gender wage gap is caused by statistical discrimination. Finally, in the third project we want to estimate how the gender wage gap changes over the wage distribution.
