Behavioral skills, such as self-control, perseverance, and discipline are important predictors of education, crime and employment. On the other hand, employment has been found to affect norms, values, work ethics and self-esteem. Existing empirical research on the effects of spare time job activities of youth by social scientists are all observational studies. Almost all studies find adverse effects of (the weekly hours of) spare time job activities on socioeconomic outcomes of teenagers, possibly due to less time spent on school-, sports- and health-related activities and more time spent on unstructured social activities associated with substance use. Ideally, estimation of the causal impact of having a spare time job requires a randomized-controlled trial (RCT). We propose a RCT-design for a pilot study in Aarhus Municipality in 2014. Our RCT-design exploits that the Municipality of Aarhus has decided to establish 500 spare time jobs across municipal divisions earmarked for disadvantaged youth.
