Title: Social Mix Housing Strategies and Disadvantaged Youth

Preventing concentrations of disadvantage and promoting socially mixed residential environments has been a longstanding strategy for Danish housing policymakers. A primary justification for this strategy has been that disadvantaged youth will have improved life opportunities if more of their neighbors are not disadvantaged. This paper test this proposition directly, investigating whether lower shares of neighbors with criminal behavior significantly affect the criminal outcomes of disadvantaged youth and, if so, under what conditions. Identification comes from the quasi-randomized allocation of disadvantaged families to social housing in Copenhagen during 2007-2010. We compare the criminal behavior of 1,500 young individuals up to three years after they were allocated to new neighborhood.
