Title: Vehicle routing and fleet sizing problems arising in servicing offshore oil and gas installations

Abstract: The upstream logistics in the oil and gas industry in Western Norway is a subject of ongoing research at Molde University College, Specialized University in Logistics. It covers problems of quantitative logistics, like the internal logistics of oil and gas installations, including production/drilling planning, management of inventory and container operations, vessel and helicopter fleet planning, operational planning of cargo and passenger transportation between onshore bases and installations, management of the supply bases, and the integration and cooperation within entire supply chain. In this lecture we focus on fleet sizing and planning of routes for supply vessels and helicopters servicing offshore installations.
The fleet sizing and operational planning of supply vessels routes is very complex due to the periodic service requirements from installations, combination of delivery and pickup services, the multi-commodity nature of demands, and uncertainties regarding weather conditions. An added source of complexity is a limited deck area designated for container loading and unloading operations at installations, and the fact that some installations are closed during the night. We introduce several models and solution algorithms developed to handle some variants of the routing problem under consideration. These include non-simultaneous pickups and deliveries, selective pickups, limited deck capacity for loading and unloading, multi-commodity case, periodic planning and fleet composition problem, and emissions reduction through speed optimization in supply vessel operations. We also present our results on passenger and pilot risk minimization in helicopter transportation to offshore installations.
