Title: Long-term consequences of type of early child care (m. Nabanita Datta Gupta).

Abstract— Universal childcare is on the political agenda in many countries; yet scant evidence exists on the long-term outcomes on children of having attending child care in such regimes. Unlike most of the literature that estimates intention-to-treat (ITT) effects, we estimate the direct effects of the type of early childhood care attended in Denmark on school final year GPA and on the probability of early high school enrollment by linking together daycare registers and educational registers. These effects are estimated for two birth cohorts of Danish children who were enrolled in either center-based day care or family day care at age 2. Exploiting variation across municipalities and time in guaranteed access to public day care as an instrument for the type of day care attended, our results show that center-based day care significantly improves test scores.
