Cluster for Operations Research and Logistics (CORAL) is offering a PhD course on Stochastic Programming with Applications in Logistics from 27-31 May 2013 at Aarhus University, Business and Social Sciences.

The course is equivalent to 5 ECTS points. There will be lectures in the morning sessions and assignments, discussions and presentations by students in the afternoon sessions.

The course starts at 9:00 on Monday 27 May and finishes with lunch at 12:00 on Friday 31 May. Lunch will be served in the basement of building 2610 (S),"lower multi-room".

There will be a guided tour of Den Gamle By on Thursday 30 May at 14.00 (Viborgvej 2, 8000 Aarhus C)

The course dinner will be held on Thursday 30 May at 18.00 at Restaurant Mefisto in the city centre of Aarhus (Volden 28, 8000 Aarhus C).

About the course

Most important decisions are made under uncertainty. It is rare that everything relevant for a decision is known when the decision is made. Stochastic programming provides a powerful tool for modeling and analyzing complex decision problems facing an uncertain future (such as uncertain prices, demand, weather, quality …).

The course will primarily focus on understanding the role of uncertainty in mathematical programming. Why is it important? What can go wrong? Why do we care? Basic algorithmic structures will be discussed, but with no focus on implementations.

To understand the issues, it is best to look at specific cases and applications. We shall study stochastic network design, stochastic facility layout, as well as some interesting cases from other areas. We shall also study, to some extent, competing modeling frameworks and indicate what are their strengths and weaknesses.

Lecturer

Professor Stein W. Wallace, Norwegian School of Economics

Stein W. Wallace is a leading international specialist in stochastic programming (SP). He co-authored the world’s first textbook in SP in 1994 (with Peter Kall) and the only book focused on modeling with SP in 2012 (with Alan King). He has published 70+ papers on SP, many focused on modeling and model interpretations as well as applications. He is now professor of operational research at The Norwegian School of Economics in Bergen. He has earlier held positions at Lancaster University Management School, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, as well as Molde University College and NTNU in Norway. He has chaired the international organization for SP, and is on several editorial boards, including INFORMS J. on Computing, Energy Systems and the new EURO J. on Transportation and Logistics.

Participation fee

The participation fee is DKK 2500 (EUR 350) and covers tuition, lunches and coffee breaks as well as a course dinner.
