Abstract: One of the major challenges faced by healthcare is workforce attrition; there is a shortage of nurses in the care units and many of them report job dissatisfaction because of high workload. In this situation, developing an effective nurse-patient assigning method would be highly required. Our goal is to develop a methodology and make significant contributions in assigning the nurses to the patients at the beginning of each shift, in such a way that the workload of nurses is balanced. Thus, the nurses will have the minimum workload and the patients can receive the care amount that would be medically required. However, this kind of operational decision is too hard to tackle without detailed process data. Equipped by Real-Time Location System technology, detailed data has been collected in the acute center of Montreal General Hospital, Canada. Then, a data-driven approach is developed to elicit the collective wisdom of the head nurses. Finally, a model is proposed to balance the workload of nurses by making the optimal assignment in each shift.
