Title: Scheduling k-shuttles in a shared storage automated storage and retrieval system

Abstract: "In this paper we study a shared-storage automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) with one crane capable of carrying multiple unit loads. We derive new structural insights by reducing the problem to a CVRP and compare multiple exact and heurist solution methods. We show that improvement over state of the art CVRP solver is possible for instances with mostly empty shelves. We use the solution methods for a simulation of different AR/SR and derive multiple novel managerial insights. We estimate the value of an increased time horizon, the marginal utility of additional capacity as well as the impact of the 2n-tour assumption."
