Cluster for Operations Research and Logistics (CORAL) is offering a PhD course on Applications of Vehicle Routing from 20-24 August 2012 at Aarhus University, Business and Social Sciences.

Effective and efficient route planning for vehicles that transport goods or provide a service is a key element of modern logistics. Good vehicle routing can make a significant difference to the cost of the operation, but cost is not the only consideration in practical vehicle routing situations. Issues such as customer service constraints, legislation on driver hours, environmental considerations and loading restrictions must also be addressed in order to produce a solution that is practical as well as economic.

The aim of this course will be to consider the issues relevant to the operation of vehicle fleets today and to discuss the most effective ways to model them. The course will also address algorithmic issues for finding solutions to the models that are built, covering both exact and heuristic approaches.

The course is equivalent to 5 ECTS points.

Two useful books to accompany the course are:

Paulo Toth & Daniele Vigo, editors (2002)  The Vehicle Routing Problem, SIAM Monographs on Discrete Mathematics and Applications ISBN 0-89871-498-2.

M. Dror, editor (2000) Arc Routing:Theory, Solutions and Applications. Kluwer, Boston. ISBN 0-7923-7898-9.
